Meet the Coaches: Ashley Tam
2021-22 Team: U18 C
Coaching History: 2 years with VFIHA (U18 C)
Where did you play minor hockey?
I started playing hockey when I was seven. I played on a Vancouver Minor boy’s team for two years and then went on to play with the Richmond Ravens. Once I reached U18, I was playing with VFIHA.
What was your coaching pathway?
I got a little taste of coaching when I was helping out with my high school’s hockey team after graduating and I enjoyed it. When I saw a posting on Facebook from a friend asking if anybody would like to coach with VFIHA, I signed up and have enjoyed coaching ever since!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from hockey?
The biggest lesson I have learned from playing hockey is in regards to teamwork. The plays that we learn in practices won’t work in games if we don’t work as a team. Playing hockey has also helped me learn how to cooperate with others, and the things I’ve learned from the sport have helped me with my career.
Why do you think it’s important for girls to have female role models in sport?
Having women in coaching roles helps young girls see that they too can lead and achieve greatness by being confident in who they are and what they do.
