Meet the 2024/25 VFIHA Board – Director, Equipment
This season we’re planning on giving everyone a chance to learn a little more about our Board members and what they do in the association! Each month we will spotlight one of our Directors with a quick 5 question interview. To kick things off, we wanted to introduce you to our Director, Equipment, Juan Carlos. It’s very likely you already know him from borrowing some gear or collecting socks and jerseys! Make sure the next time you see him to say hi!
What inspired you to join the board?
”I had no idea about the gear needed for a hockey player until my two older daughters joined the Angels. I borrowed gear for them and observed how hard Felix(Hui) worked in this role. I wanted to give back to the Association for providing such an amazing program that lends hockey gear to girls.”
What do you love most about your position?
”I love seeing new players excited about putting on hockey gear for the first time. I also appreciate hearing from parents about their relief at not having to spend a lot of money or time sourcing gear. Additionally, parents often express gratitude for the flexibility of the program, knowing they can return the gear if their daughters decide they don’t want to continue after a season.”
What are some of the challenges of your role and how can parents help?
“One of the biggest challenges is coordinating with all the parents, coaches, and managers to address their needs. It takes a lot of time to get through the first part of the season and even more to complete it. During those start and finish times, I feel like I spend more time at the rink after work than at home!
Parents can help by forming a team committee to work with the team manager. For example, one parent could be responsible for collecting and distributing jerseys at the beginning and end of the season, another could look for good-quality used goalie gear, and another could organize team bonding events at various points throughout the season to thank players and coaches.”
What is the best way to keep hockey gear smelling fresh?
”Air drying the gear, using Febreze spray, and placing fabric softener sheets inside (unless someone has allergies) can help keep it smelling fresh.”
What song do you listen to most on the way to the Rink?
“Jump Around by House of Pain.”
Carlos also wanted to give a shout out to Kevin Jay for assisting him with Equipment for the past year and a half!
