On-Ice Helpers

Every great coach starts somewhere.

For many volunteers, becoming an On-Ice Helper is the first step on the Coach Volunteer Ladder. Whether you're a current Angels player looking to give back or a parent interested in coaching, this role provides a fun, supportive way to gain experience while making a positive impact on younger athletes.

Why Become an On-Ice Helper?

For Current Angels Players

Helping younger players is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to the game.

As an On-Ice Helper, you'll:

  • Be a positive role model for younger players
  • Build leadership, communication, and mentoring skills
  • Reinforce your own hockey fundamentals by teaching others
  • Help create a welcoming, supportive hockey community
  • Gain valuable coaching experience that can lead to future coaching opportunities

There is tremendous value in peer-to-peer learning. Younger players often look up to older athletes, making current Angels players uniquely positioned to inspire confidence, demonstrate skills, and foster a love of the game.

For Parents & Adult Volunteers

You don't need coaching experience to get started.

The On-Ice Helper role provides a low-pressure introduction to coaching where you can:

  • Learn alongside experienced coaches
  • Build confidence on the ice
  • Develop coaching and leadership skills
  • Decide if coaching is something you'd like to pursue further

Many of our Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches began their coaching journey as On-Ice Helpers.

Your Coaching Journey

On-Ice Helper is the first step in our Coach Volunteer Ladder.

On-Ice Helper → Assistant Coach → Head Coach → Division Coach Coordinator → Director of Coaching

 

On-Ice Helper Requirements

To ensure the safety of our players and maintain BC Hockey insurance coverage, all On-Ice Helpers must meet the following requirements.

Registration

  • Must be a current registered member of BC Hockey / Hockey Canada.
  • If the individual is not currently registered through a minor association, junior team, senior team, or as an associate member, the association must register the individual before they participate.

Equipment

  • CSA-certified hockey helmet with chin strap fastened.
  • Appropriate face protection for the player's level of play.
  • BNQ-certified neck guard for all minor hockey-aged players.
  • U15 and younger helpers must wear full hockey equipment.
  • Helpers above U15 must wear equipment appropriate for their division.

Certifications

Any helper who is not a BC Hockey minor or junior player must:

  • The Shift Forward Program (volunteers & bench staff)
  • Be under the direct supervision of certified team officials
