Another fantastic season has come and gone, and while we are already looking forward to next season (register here!), we’d also like to look back on the last few months and celebrate everything that our association has accomplished. Here are just a few highlights from the 2018-19 season!

21 teams and over 290 players: VFIHA is continuing to lead the way as BC’s largest female ice hockey association. This season we had two rep teams (Peewee and Midget) and 19 house teams ranging in age from Initiation to Juvenile.

4 PCAHA banners won: Our Bantam C1 team won two banners this season, taking both their division’s league banner and playoff banner. Atom C3 won their division’s playoff banner, with Bantam C2 and Peewee C1 also playing in their respective championship finals. Our Juvenile team won their division’s team achievement banner.

5 tournament gold medals and lots of team bonding fun: VFIHA teams across all age groups competed in tournaments in BC, Alberta and Quebec this season. Midget C1, Midget C2 and Midget A all brought home gold medals, with Atom C1 bringing home two gold medals from two different tournaments! In addition, Peewee C1 won silver at a tournament in Vernon.

138 girls in attendance at Come Try Hockey: Our three annual Come Try Hockey events, held in August, October and March, have continued to introduce many girls to the sport of hockey through a fun and free experience! The biggest of this season’s three events was in March, with 72 girls in attendance.

First-ever provincial appearance for Midget A: For the first time in VFIHA history, our Midget A team attended the BC Hockey Female Championships. The competition was held in Fort St. John, and the team finished with a 1-3-1 record.

34 female officials: VFIHA works hard to recruit, mentor and lead the next generation of female officials, and this season we were thrilled to welcome 12 new female officials to the group.

16 female coaches: As with our officials, we are actively working to recruit and mentor more female coaches. This season we were excited to have 16 female coaches leading teams. Several of these coaches play in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League (SCWHL), and two of them won gold at the SCWHL provincials!

Another season of Spring 4-on-4: Our popular Spring 4-on-4 League returned this season, this time with special wizarding world themed teams! All games are at Burnaby 8 Rinks, and the season runs from April to June.

Instagram account launch: We launched our Instagram account this season, and it quickly grew to over 300 followers! Make sure to follow us on Instagram, along with Facebook and Twitter.

TV appearances: Our association made several appearances on TV screens this season! Our logo was featured in a Scotiabank ad, Peewee C1 player Isabelle’s story was shared on APTN, and our Atom C3 team was on Hockey Night in Canada!

Thank you to our sponsors: A big thank you has to go to our sponsors and supporters, including those at the association level, such as Scotiabank and viaSport, and those at the team level, such as PDG and Max Performance Sports & More.
